Community-focused and Sustainable Police Recruitment in Caddo Parish

In recent years, police departments around the nation have struggled to recruit and retain officers. The result has been lowered standards, budgetary friction, and communities left without an adequately staffed police force. The solution has to be more thoughtful than throwing tax payer money at the problem; one-time grants have proved an ineffective mechanism, and left departments scrambling when the money runs out

Shortages have far reaching effects for public safety initiatives and day to day law enforcement. Encouraging sustainable and stable police departments is crucial to maintaining true law and order, one in which communities feel safe and agencies have the data, resources, and education they need. In Shreveport, Louisiana, recent headlines have highlighted smart initiatives from local police departments to strengthen and improve their staff numbers.

Agencies in Caddo Parish are collaborating to harness talent and connect former service members with police jobs. The Shreveport Police Department and Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office have partnered with Shreveport’s economic development team to recruit former military forces personnel, leveraging their existing talent into roles where they are needed. The veterans’ experience allows the police departments to accelerate the hiring and training process, as there is an overlap between the skills acquired during military law enforcement service and that of civilian law enforcement. The Caddo Parish initiative is strategic on multiple fronts–it supports veterans, addresses shortages in local law enforcement with experienced candidates, and streamlines processes that often take much longer.

This summer, the Shreveport Police Department has intensified its efforts to recruit talent, hosting a career fest in early June. The NextGen Career Fest was more than a job fair, and involved interactive stations where students could learn life-saving skills. Community engagement and education, like the Career Fest, is a powerful tool for building trust between police departments and their surrounding community. Combining public safety education with a career-focused event strengthens relationships and gives young people compelling insights into what a career in public service could look like.

Law enforcement is a crucial component of public safety, and states have a strong interest in ensuring that their police departments have the tools they need to recruit and retain high quality officers. Shreveport demonstrates a smart approach to investing in public safety without lowering standards or relying on temporary fixes, all while building community relationships and   connecting veterans with jobs and students with skills and education.
